  19. Reminds me of 386 users complaining that Doom is too jumpy. Also reminds me of
  20. college students who spend $400 on beer every week and complain that they are
  21. broke. I'm not saying you drink, but I have never known anyone who couldn't
  22. save money, just people who didn't choose to.

  32. If I had my own personal internet server hooked directly into the internet, I
  33. would probably stop using THOR. The NORMAL user is accessing a server through
  34. a PPP account at an average of 14.4kb. Now, you are saying TIN will be faster
  35. in that situation? I can't see why Kjell should write THOR just for you and
  36. ignore the populous. I personally would like my email and news delivered by
  37. strippers with breakfast every morning, but I know how to be reasonable.

  39. I started with TIN because Grn wouldn't work. It was painfully slow. By the
  40. time it loaded the articles, I had lost interest in reading the news. I got
  41. GRn to work. It was faster than TIN, but slower than poking through articles
  42. with AMosaic. Finally I got THOR working. It seemed faster. Here's the
  43. example:

  45. I chose a huge newsgroup to test this thing:
  46. alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.women - it has about 2000 posts. I loaded the
  47. entire group with TIN, GRn and THOR. Here's the results using a PPP connection
  48. at 14.4kb:
  49.         TIN:  42 minutes
  50.         GRn:  28 minutes
  51.         THOR: 19 minutes

  53. Now that's a bit unfair, so I shut down, then loaded it again after 3 hours -
  54. waiting for about 50 posts to pop up (This is a fast group, too bad 99% of the
  55. posts are AOL users saying 'me too')
  56.         TIN:  18 minutes
  57.         GRn:  8 minutes
  58.         THOR: 8 minutes

  60. It appears to me that GRn and THOR match up ok, but TIN is much slower. Now
  61. add in THOR's ability to load selected headers, scan them, and load the
  62. selected articles, THOR is much faster in actual use then GRn.

  64. Well, that's just my opinion - and to think a few months ago I refused to
  65. download THOR :)
