-
- Reminds me of 386 users complaining that Doom is too jumpy. Also reminds me of
- college students who spend $400 on beer every week and complain that they are
- broke. I'm not saying you drink, but I have never known anyone who couldn't
- save money, just people who didn't choose to.
-
- >: Much faster what? Much faster reading one posting, yes. Much faster
- >: reading a newsgroup: no.
-
- >Much faster, period. You have to remember- my news server is a Linux box

-
- If I had my own personal internet server hooked directly into the internet, I
- would probably stop using THOR. The NORMAL user is accessing a server through
- a PPP account at an average of 14.4kb. Now, you are saying TIN will be faster
- in that situation? I can't see why Kjell should write THOR just for you and
- ignore the populous. I personally would like my email and news delivered by
- strippers with breakfast every morning, but I know how to be reasonable.
-
- I started with TIN because Grn wouldn't work. It was painfully slow. By the
- time it loaded the articles, I had lost interest in reading the news. I got
- GRn to work. It was faster than TIN, but slower than poking through articles
- with AMosaic. Finally I got THOR working. It seemed faster. Here's the
- example:
-
- I chose a huge newsgroup to test this thing:
- alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.women - it has about 2000 posts. I loaded the
- entire group with TIN, GRn and THOR. Here's the results using a PPP connection
- at 14.4kb:
- TIN: 42 minutes
- GRn: 28 minutes
- THOR: 19 minutes
-
- Now that's a bit unfair, so I shut down, then loaded it again after 3 hours -
- waiting for about 50 posts to pop up (This is a fast group, too bad 99% of the
- posts are AOL users saying 'me too')
- TIN: 18 minutes
- GRn: 8 minutes
- THOR: 8 minutes
-
- It appears to me that GRn and THOR match up ok, but TIN is much slower. Now
- add in THOR's ability to load selected headers, scan them, and load the
- selected articles, THOR is much faster in actual use then GRn.
-
- Well, that's just my opinion - and to think a few months ago I refused to
- download THOR :)
